Welcome to the Rose Acres counseling department |
Mrs. Gunter and Mrs. Bohn are here to support every child on their way to becoming a successful adult. We enjoy doing this through instruction of the Pattonville approved character traits and education in emotional intelligence. Curriculum for emotional intelligence is adapted from the book Top 20 Teens: Discovering the Best Kept Thinking, Learning, & Communicating Secrets of Successful Teenagers. Emotional intelligence involves mastering the skills of thinking, learning, and communicating. During individual and group sessions students are taught about the influences of non-verbal and extra-verbal communication. They overcome fears and negative beliefs about themselves using a belief scale. Students learn that hurtful actions often start as anger or worry thoughts and how to stop those thoughts. Once those thoughts are stopped, our responses to others can be more respectful. Every child can be successful once they learn the secrets of thinking, learning and communicating. |

Mrs. Bohn and Mrs. Gunter teach lessons focusing on the character trait for each month. These traits include respect, responsibility, service, perseverance, honesty, peace, cooperation, and self-control. Each month, home connections are sent home to give parents and children the opportunity to discuss and incorporate the character trait at home. |

| The counselors at Rose Acres School also help children cope with loss and the changes associated with divorce and death. Starting in November and lasting for six to eight sessions, children meet in the counseling room with their peers who have experienced a similar loss. Students share their stories and learn that they are not alone in their experiences or feelings. | |
