Try this at home. It's important that the book is at a readable level for your child!
Before Reading:
Introduce, read and discuss the title and blurb on the back of the book.
Ask what your child already knows about ideas/concepts related to the specific book.
Do a "picture walk." This means to just read the pictures from beginning to end.
During Reading:
Allow for your child to read the story independently twice. Then read it yourself aloud.
Stop as you read and discuss what's going on. Ask questions related to the book and your child's experiences.
After Reading:
Discuss the characters, setting, problem and solution. Ask him or her to retell you the story in his or her own words.
Next...(writing activity)
Ask him or her to write their retelling down. This takes time but is a great chance to see what they are doing!

Please see the end of Reading for a writing idea.
Also...
We are working on creating our own stories. These can be either fiction or nonfiction. Feel free to send stories to school. We'd love to hear them!
